yeah it is. Did you hear a few months ago about the satellite I think it was that was falling to earth but they didnt know where it was falling? The odds of it hitting people when it falls to earth are pretty low though.
simpsons555 - 10.5.2012 14:28:52
nah, it has a parachute as you can see in the end :) just a simple mistake no worries.

What did I do wrong? I just commented on a spectacular piece of footage...you singled me out for your own reasons...inbox me and tell me why? Then we'll start talking...:-)

There are regulations on the trajectories launch vehicles are permitted to take depending on launch site to minimize or eliminate that risk of hitting a city. The risk of hitting boats is small because of the size of the ocean compared to the surface area of boats on it, but precautions are made for this as well. When a launch vehicle gets flown as much as the shuttle was, you know a lot about how it will behave and can plan appropriately.

Freaking awesome!

Yes, a nozzle extention is jettisoned so that the impact of the water does less damage.
78peterlein - 25.4.2012 17:50:30
that vid is a piece of art!

Best shuttle footage I've seen.
When the SRB's are about to hit the water it appears as if something is ejected and hits the water just ahead of them. I know the nose cones are ejected when the parachutes are deployed but do you know what it is?

Coh when the camera spins, It's making my eyes go dodgy :L

The boosters separate well out over the Atlantic, and the area is cleared of all vessels by the Navy and Coast Guard. The booster recovery ship is right there. Barring extreme troubles, where the boosters land is pretty precisely predetermined. In the event of a disaster, they can be destroyed before they can do any harm.
thedebater88 - 19.4.2012 19:04:00
The launch followed an arced, ballistic trajectory out to the East, over the Atlantic. They know where it is going to go. There was no chance of the boosters coming back over land, and if they did, they hadself-destruct systems. As for boats, I believe NASA and the Coast Guard posted maritime warnings.

they must've clicked on the video by mistake, they were actually looking for Justin Bieber
213SEMPERFI - 16.4.2012 17:06:02
They're probably programmed to land on the sea.
ChayotAiKadesh - 16.4.2012 12:14:06
don't they have it calculated? I'm sure they worked out to pinpoint precision the speed and angle the shuttle needs to take off in order for the boosters to land somewhere in the sea
yomerisisisisisma - 16.4.2012 6:19:23
Woooowwwwwwwwwwww!!!
FionnMarr - 15.4.2012 2:47:13

136 people dont have parachutes

Once it is in orbit it will continue to go around kerbin due to it's high speed.
To deorbit (e.g. get back down) they simply burn retrograde (fire their engines opposite the way they're going) until their speed is small enough such that they will go down into the earth.
502shifty502 - 10.4.2012 1:54:15
no they time it to fall in a comparitively specific area of the ocean.
