I recall hearing that a significant reason for the "cleanup" was all the very dangerous waste materials that had been thrown into the river.

If I remember correctly, there were 2 bodies (skeletons) found wedged in the rocks at the base of the falls.

That's rich!!! That's as good as explaining to kids that black and white pictures are not in color because the film was color film but the world was black and white back then. Ha ha ha.

I used pictures I took of the waterless falls to prove to my kids that the falls were turned off at night. I told them one morning the man that turned them on overselpt and that's how I got the pictures.

I was there that year. The US Army Corps of Engineers stopped the flow over the American side to study erosion and to see if they could slow it. We had visited several times before and after because we had relatives near there. That was the only time I was allowed to go on the wooden walkway. I still have a few large rocks that would have been underwater forever. Really impressive to a 9 year old boy.
