no Yuri Gagarin is look it up it's on NASA's website, then after that Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space less than a month later. Joseph kittinger just holds the records for having the highest, fastest and longest skydive, from a height greater than 31 km

actually theres a funny story....when he returned and on one of the celebrations Khrushchev asked him.."so you were in space..did you saw god" and Gagarin was known fir his sense of humor, told the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union - "yea, i did", and Khrushchev told him quietly - "ok, but dont tell anyone" !
